Ska & Nynäs Brew Day – A collaborative comedy

| maj 31, 2013

Lightning doesn’t strike twice but craft breweries do. In Nynäshamn anyway.

You only have to turn the clock back a few weeks to when Sam and Dr Pat from the iconic US craft brewery Dogfish Head paid Nynäshamns Ångbryggeri a visit and brewed an Ancient Ale.

It marked the first significant collaborative craft brew with an established international brewery in Sweden, and you can taste what all the fuss is about at 10am tomorrow morning.

And now it’s happened again, except this time historical research has been swapped for surfboards. Because this time Ska Brewing came to town and that’s just how the Ska boys roll.

Ska Brewing are well known for taking fun very seriously. And they’re good at it. Very good in fact.

It’s pretty much impossible not to break into a smile when you meet Ska brewer Thomas Larsen and ‘Bar Room Hero’  Arlo Grammatica (no I didn’t make that up). If these guys were any more laid back they’d be horizontal (which come to think of it Arlo briefly was during the morning, recovering from his heroic duties of the night before).

But just because the Ska crew like a laugh doesn’t mean they don’t take their beers very seriously. Their range of memorably named brews includes a striking porter (because nobody bowls better sober), a zingy red ale and of course their canned IPA Modus Hoperandi that has taken Sweden by storm.

Thomas and Arlo were at Nynäs as a result of a meeting at last year’s SBWF set up by ‘brewery match-maker’ Jörgen Hasselqvist from Oliver Twist. The idea was to combine the kind of crispy pilsner Nynäs are so good at brewing with some US hop craziness courtesy of Ska, plus some crushed caraway seeds for a ‘touch of aquavit’.

The result is a yet unnamed 7.8% ABV imperial pilsner spiked with El Dorado, Apollo and Bravo hops added just 30 minutes towards the end of a 90 minute boil to get some juicy US hop aromas without extracting too much bitterness (the lowest Alpha Acid content of these three hops is a bludgeoning 15.8%!)

Right now the beer is chilling out in Nynäs’s tanks but in just a few weeks it will be ready to taste and I’ll calling it early – it’s going to be a fun beer. Hardly surprising, considering the amount of laughter that went into brewing it.

Ska's Arlo Grammatica was his usual reserved self on brew day!

It’s not all play though. Here’s Thomas hard at work mashing out.
