Screen shot 2013-02-20 at 12.04.47 PMSwedish breweries Krönleins and Åbro should both busy writing their acceptance speeches after winning gold at the International Brewing Awards 2013, known as ‘Oscars of beer’

It’s becoming a bit of a habit for Krönleins, the family-owned brewery in Halmstad which scooped gold in the low alcohol category for its Stockholm Fine Festival Beer 0.3%.

Vimmerby-based Åbro rather fittingly took gold with its Bryggmästaren Premium Guld in the Lager 5.5-6.9% category, as well as a silver in the cider category (up to 4.9%) for its Rekorderlig Jordgubb-Lime.

The International Brewing Awards is the world’s oldest international beer competition and this year attracted some 800 entries from 30 countries.

The awards ceremony will take place with April. We at BeerSweden say congratulations to both breweries on their success!

Please note that the press release gives a somewhat biased impression. There isn’t one cider category, but three. The first two contain the more traditional ciders and the third category, where Rekorderlig got a silver, allows for other fruits, juices and flavours.

CAMRA or French and German law may sometimes be a bit too strict but I personally can’t see much difference between the ingredients in Rekorderlig*) and any other brand name alcopop. In my opinion, it isn’t cider but where’s the limit? What shortcuts would we accept in making beer, even if it tastes like (cheap) beer?
